WAKE UP TO JAZZ RAGAS
(excerpt)
Musicians Paula Jeanine and Richard Bennet incorporate everything from Bollywood, Jazz, Hindustani classical to make their brand of music.
|
Today, Jeanine is delving deeper into a groove that she calls American Ghazals. Taking classical Indian songs, infusing them with English lyrics, that however don't contort "the traditional themes, So along with love as a theme there's women's issues, the beloved as the metaphor for a spiritual longing, the theme of the lost self," she says.
For Jeanine, this exercise with Indian music means a regular riyaaz , "That's the only way you can completely indulge yourself in the music. On my first trip to India in December 2001, I spent five months taking lessons in classical Indian music," she says. |
